Flower Facts & FAQ

"Let us share some flower facts as well as answer a few questions."

Some General Information about Sending Get Well Flowers to a Hospital

Patients in certain areas of hospitals, such as Intensive Care Units, are not allowed to receive cut flowers or plants. Some such patients can receive Mylar balloons and stuffed animals. If you are in doubt about what you are allowed to send to a particular patient in a particular hospital, call the information center of that hospital.

Due to possible latex allergies in hospital patients most hospitals do not allow patients to receive latex balloons. However, most hospitals allow patients who are not in restricted areas to receive Mylar balloons. Mylar balloons often last a lot longer and come in many cheerful styles and colors.

If you are sending flowers to the hospital and feel things are a bit too uncertain to sign the card “Get well soon!” or if, in fact, you know the patient won’t be getting well it is always appropriate to say, “I’m thinking of you” or “We’re thinking of you.”

Rose Color Trends: Pretty Pink Roses

A rose is a rose is a rose. Or is it? Unbeknownst to most of us, the 1990s spawned a virtual baby boom of rose varieties. Brought on by a fertile production period, today there are close to 120 rose varieties commercially available - up from the few dozen choices found in flower shops in the 1980s. These new rose varieties have not only expanded the color palette - from extreme lights to bright brights - but have enhanced characteristics such as bloom size, shape, stem length and strength of fragrance. Choose roses from the family of traditional bridal pinks or adopted siblings of hip hot pinks. Cousins on this family tree include peaches, apricots, corals and lavenders.

Where did the tradition of sending funeral flowers come from?

Flowers have always played an important role in burial traditions because of their soothing qualities. In ancient cultures, floral and herb essences were used to anoint the bodies of the deceased and aromatic flowers and greens were displayed.

I need to send sympathy flowers. What should I send?

It is never easy comforting a relative, friend or associate who has lost a loved one. People are often uncertain as to the best way to show their sympathy. Adding to this uncertainty are changing trends in how Americans commemorate the death of a loved one. Services are simpler and shorter. Viewing periods are now typically limited to one day, if they occur at all. A greater number of cremations have resulted in shorter or no memorial services. Flowers have traditionally been sent to the funeral home for display during the viewing and service. However, this does not mean that there should be no show of sympathy if no service is held. Grief therapists agree that the rituals surrounding death are an aid in the grieving process. In instances where there is no service, experts recommend sending condolences to the bereaved person or family's home.

How do I take care of loose or boxed flowers?

Keep your flowers in a cool place until you can get them in a flower food solution. Don't forget how important it is to follow the mixing directions on the flower food packet. Fill a clean (washed with a detergent or antibacterial cleaning solution), deep vase with water and add a flower food from your florist. Remove leaves that will be below the waterline. Leaves in water will promote bacterial microbial growth that may limit water uptake by the flower. Re-cut stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife. Place the flowers in the vase solution you've prepared.

Should I put my floral arrangement in the sun? Will that help it last longer?

No. Growing flowers require sunshine for maturation, but cut flowers will fade much faster if exposed to heat and direct sunlight. To keep flowers fresh longer, place them in a location away from sun and drafts.

Include a contact name and address on the card so the family knows who to thank.

I want to send flowers to a friend. What flowers are best for friendship?

One of the best-kept secrets is that a gift of flowers from one friend to another is the perfect fit, and the flower power can be immense. Pick a flower or flowers that remind you of your friend's unique spirit, and include a note linking the flower to them. One of the greatest gifts you can give a person is the gift of really seeing them, especially at the times that matter most. There is something magical about sharing your life's path with a friend for those important milestones... marking special times with flowers will keep you in their memories forever. Congratulate them on a professional achievement, a baby or anything new, or send a big dose of love when they really need it most, after a break-up or a spell of bad news. The time to build a friendship is when it's strong, so one of my favorite times to express my appreciation is when they're least expecting it.

What causes Valentine's Day rose prices to be different than everyday rose prices?

A simple case of supply and demand affects the price of Valentine's Day roses: Valentine's Day inspires the heaviest demand for long-stemmed roses, and several rosebuds must be sacrificed to create a single long-stemmed rose. After the Christmas season demand for red roses is filled, growers need 50-70 days to produce enough roses for Valentine's Day. Winter's shorter daylight hours and higher energy costs hamper efforts to grow large rose crops. Inclement weather often requires extreme measures to ensure that flowers are delivered in time. To fulfill the tremendous number of orders for Valentine's Day flowers, we have to hire additional help, work longer hours and acquire extra delivery vehicles and drivers.

Is it ok to send sympathy flowers to a family's home? If so, when is it appropriate to send them?

Absolutely. This is a wonderful way to express your sympathy and is a common trend. Some people choose to send flowers to the home immediately while others prefer to wait a week or more. There are no rules.

Flowers can be a very comforting reminder during the grieving process that friends haven't forgotten.

I want to send flowers to Mom. What should I send?

Let's face it. Moms deserve a floral reward just about every day of the year. And, what moms want more than anything is to feel their kids' love. So, how easy is this? Pick a day, any day, and send her the kind of flowers that express your love. Choose flowers that say something about her. Does she love purple? Does her favorite painting have daisies? Did she carry roses at her wedding? On her birthday, tuck an old photo of her and you into the card with a note saying another year younger. Or, send her flowers you grew in your garden growing up. For many of us, an aunt, a godmother, in-law or even a family friend has been a mom to us. Return the love with a gift of flowers saying, Thank you for the impact you've made on my life.

I have a rose that is droopy at the neck. Is it possible to revive it?

Believe it or not, yes! If a rose wilts prematurely, remove it from the arrangement and try the following easy tip to perk it up. Fill a sink with warm water. Lay the rose horizontally in the water bath and cut the stem (about 1 ) with a sharp knife under the warm water. Leave the rose in the bath for about two hours and let the water cool. This process can work wonders, but if the rose is already past its vase life it will not revive.

I have seen a lot of different styles of floral arrangements at funeral services lately. What is best? How do I order a "special" design?

Highly personalized sympathy tributes that depict an aspect of a person's essence are a growing trend. If the deceased was a man who loved the outdoors, perhaps a tribute incorporating branches and natural materials would be ideal. If the deceased was an avid gardener, a tribute with a collection of garden flowers may be a perfect choice.

Be prepared to give the florist a few hints about the person you want to memorialize. If you prefer to send a design that is more a reflection of your style, be sure to communicate that to the florist.

Most flower shops will have photos of traditional sympathy styles for you to peruse.

How can I make my fresh flower arrangement last?

Keep the vase filled (or floral foam soaked) with water containing a flower food provided by your florist. Flower foods make flowers last longer but it is important to follow the mixing directions on the flower food packet. Most packets are to be mixed with either a pint or a quart of water. Flower foods should not be diluted with more water than is specified on the packet. If the flower food solution becomes cloudy, replace it entirely with properly mixed flower food solution. If possible, re-cut stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife. Be sure to use a sharp knife or clippers that will not crush the stems. Immediately place the stems into solution. Keep flowers in a cool spot (65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators. (Appliances like televisions give off heat, which causes flowers to dehydrate.) Most flowers will last longer under cool conditions.
